PCC News – reflecting on the meeting on 2 June

The PCC meeting on 2nd June was the first meeting chaired by our new vicar, Revd Judith Ashurst. The meeting was well attended with members including the three church wardens, our representatives to the deanery synod and the elected members.

Judith started by outlining the role of the PCC. The members are the legal trustees of our churches and the focus should be on mission and serving the parish.

We covered a number of important aspects of governance. PCC meetings will take place every other month, with a new Standing Committee meeting in between. We agreed that the name of the parish is to be confirmed as Thornthwaite cum Braithwaite with Newlands. It makes clear the scope of the parish and reflects our three churches.

We discussed finances. Voluntary income, mainly giving of members has been falling and action is required. We had the good news that 6 potential suppliers have expressed an interest in tendering for the first stage of the planned building work at St Mary’s and we’re hopeful that work will be under way within a few months. It’s a major project, which we’re hoping to complete within three years, funded by the Pearson Trust. Later this year we plan to hold an open meeting to communicate plans and progress and develop the vision for St Mary’s as a key resource for Thornthwaite and the parish.

There was positive feedback from the Keswick Mission Community social and workshop and we’ll take an active part in developing the community as well as exploring how it can help us in our mission here in the parish.

We covered a number of other topics including safeguarding and Braithwaite School.

Looking ahead, we agreed to have an awayday in August to develop the Mission Action Plan for the parish, identifying priorities for the next 12 months.
